Alternative Voices is a stamp series that highlights the influence of the LGBTQ+ community in the music industry. The stamps are presented in an informative pane and showcase each artists individuality. Each stamp is designed using a different shape and monochrome color palette.
Roles: Designer, Illustrator, Researcher
Tools used: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
Concept
For this project it was important to highlight the uniqueness of each artist. Because of this, I chose a single shape to construct each of the artist's faces out of. Jason Mraz is made of triangles, Tracy Chapman of squares, Frank Ocean of hexagons, and Melissa Etheridge of pentagons.
Color
Another key element of this project is color. The rainbow, being a widely recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ pride, was an aspect I wanted to include. It can be overplayed. For that reason, I chose to simplify the rainbow into four main colors which I used throughout the the series.
Type
The type I chose here was intentional. I wanted a typeface that is minimal but strong. Something that could be large and readable but not a distraction from the focal point of the series. Having the type built into the edge of the stamps contributed to this idea.
Copy & Layout
For this project I valued consistency throughout each of the small biographies I wrote for the artists and delivered similar information for each. Heavier weights of type highlighted the artist’s names and most recognizable work. I used a four column layout to give each artist their own section of the page.
